Here’s something for everyone who, like me, has been eagerly expecting the 2nd part of the Japanese hip hop post @ shrimp. I picked these up in Kobe last summer after some time trawling thru record stores and only have a little info on each one, but here’s what I know.
???? (Buto Masashi) released this track, produced by DJ Dolbee, in 2003. Masashi’s got a website with some audio samples here - his usual production seems a lot more poppy tho. DJ Dolbee’s been producing for a while and their a few english language websites flogging his stuff.
Fragment are a production duo. This is taken from 2004’s ? EP . The MC is called Yon Kid. I know no more - any info appreciated.
???? - A1 6.1mb
Fragment f/Yon Kid - Sayonara/Konichiwa 7mb
Twitch reports that Stephen Chow (Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle) is keen on importing hip hop culture to Hong Kong… from Korea. Story here. Canto-pop/movie star Edison Chen is in on it too.
Back in Japan hip hop combined with edo-period samurai anime in 2004’s hyper-stylish Samurai Champloo series. If you do bitorrent there’s a link here. Visual scratch cutting, breakdancing fighting styles, graffiti-themed episodes and a hip hop soundtrack from Force of Nature. Here’s a track from the soundtrack - nothing groundbreaking but nice nonetheless.
Force of Nature - Tsurugi no Mai 4.7mb
