broken beat is often derided. it’s from West London. it’s influenced by jazz. many people who listen to it may or may not have a copy of the observer balanced embarassingly on the edge of their coffee table. it challenges people because they associate it with things they assume are unchallenging. and such. it has, however always shared the back seat with garage, dubstep (before it was called that) and house. back when J da Flex had a show on 1xtra you used to hear Zed Bias, El-B, MJ Cole, Menta alongside Bugz in the Attic and Landslide (off hospital records – usually a DnB label). The main night (co-op) travelled with fwd from the liquid rooms to plastic people and used to be on fwd’s present sunday night spot. so although it’s often derided, it’s a part of everything else (and more specifically things you might think of as valuable). oh and house… did i mention house? that’s important.

misa negra is kaidi tatham, afronaught is on the remix. this one is old. it came out on IG Culture’s label, people records in 1998.

kaidi tatham and afronaught are two members of bugz in the attic. bugz did (do?) a LOT of remixes (i remember a great one of Macy Gray). here they are making a muscle up on Berlin’s Jazzanova.
jazzanova – mwela mwela (here i am) (bugz in the attic remix)

dom um romao is a brazilian percussionist who has played on a lot of very good jazz (and indeed fusion) records and has about a dozen under his belt as a bandleader. here’s a track from opaque (that’s seiji by any other name) off this 2002 record of dom um romao remixes.
dom um romao – lake of perseverance (opaque remix)

here’s a sean paul bootleg. i have next to no information about this. the label had a cartoon of a naked fat woman and a hotmail address. there was another dom um romao remix on the same 12 which is on discogs here.

this one is a spasm. obviously in a good way. i don’t know if you’d call it broken beat. obviously this doesn’t matter. the percussion is broken every way. plus SIRENS. there’s a bio of boston rodriguez here. if you only download one of these…

I like this post a lot. Can I just add that the Observer is perched on my coffee table at this very moment, and that I’m going for dinner in west London this evening. The enormous cardboard boxset of remixes was legendary.

Jazzanova also did a LOT of remixes, including one of MJ Cole. http://www.sonarkollektiv.com/tracks/DE-P96-04-99042/
