the art of talking over things

Raekwon & Ghostface tackle ‘ABC’ – not the break, just the track. directly. taken from this.

Raekwon f/ Ghostface – ABC 128k 1.6mb

This is (months) old. Wiley devotes a track off Tunnel Vision 6 to talking over Dizzee’s diss track. Stops the track, tells a story, starts it up again gets bored, stops it. Trim said he only puts 50-75% effort into his mixtapes. Wiley’s reply isn’t lack of effort, it’s the audio track on the DVD where the actors talk about how much the trailers smelt, it’s MCing for the forums, it’s stand up, it’s quite direct, it’s awesome. Hold tight anyone.

Wiley – Reply to Dizzee 128k 5.9mb

I find it hard to tally the badboy aspect of the whole thing (the force of “pussy ho”, the violence intimated) with the childishness of it (“you pinched Lisa Maffia’ bum in Agai Napa”, u r a “donut”). In fact the cartoon covers for In At The Deep End etc seem an accurate representation of this….
A guy at work has this idea about Dubstep being backpacker grime. What do you make of this?
The quarta 330 stuff is lovely, thank you for putting it up.

badboyism could be seen as a performance that rests on being sharp/not standing still long enough to be/hold one consistent attitude. a few people have told me they think this track is stupid actually… and sometimes Wiley does play the clown, but I enjoy that just as much as the other roles he plays…

hehe backpacker grime. my initial thought is the way the populatity of the respective scenes is going, you’d be better off calling grime ‘Avirex Dubstep’. Pigeonholing can get over-zealous although the idea of ‘backpacker grime’ assumes the primacy of grime which isn’t really true chonologically (grime just broke first) although maybe the assumption of grime’s primacy is based on the assumption of greater authenticity in grime, which could come from assuming the racial make-up of the two scenes. but I’m assuming a hell of a lot here.

hey man, sorry I didn’t see you’d responded! I’m on my Friday pm blog trawl..

I really like Wiley, out of the lot of them, and I like what you call the ‘directness’ of the track, and the looseness the mixtape format of the Tunnel Vision series allows.

Yeah I don’t know about the backpacker grime thing – the guy who’s point it is has dj’d garage for a long time, is a hip hop head, and this sort of combines to mean he doesn’t like dubstep. Likes calling it cissy, I suppose.

Anyway, have fun in NL. Cargo next Thursday? I think thats in London..
