Hailing from Kinshasa, Konono no.1 have been playing since the 70s but have recently toured and recorded with Bjork and are so currently subject to a mild firestorm of hype. They had a Gilles Peterson session not so long ago - there’s video here.
konono no.1 - a.e.i.o.u. 320k 13.9mb (from this)
Antoine Moundanda plays the sanza, an enormous resonating thumb piano that also found it’s way in variant to cuba. This is one of the more dissonant pieces.

The DRC is huge, diverse, descriptions can get cliched. Kinshasa can get crazy. In the east it gets pretty dangerous. minimal reportage here. more here.
…further north, the buda ethiopiques series is being posted in full here.

Hey, thanks for linking me -I would never have heard of Konono No. 1 otherwise.
Cheers!

I was at the pictured Konono No.1 gig, actually - it was part of the Steve Reich season at the Barbican last year. Blew me away after brilliant performance of Steve Reich’s drumming, dj Spooky collaboration with Kronos Quartet and Coldcut’s set, where one of their connections came loose and the music just stopped half way through - leaving them really awkwardly standing on stage.. then shuffling off.
