flashdance last week in Victoria seemed to attract more observers, although perhaps that was just because the layout of the station allowed the balconies a constant (and visible) aerial view. flashdancing in a surveillance society means everyone is supremely aware of themselves, others and the cameras that will be used (frequently self-reflexively) to mediate the two. no-one dances with their eyes closed. base performance. fun but functional.

a few days later, with characteristic paranoia, the Ministry of Defense predicted a dystopian future in which flashmobs will be used by states, terrorists or criminal gangs to challenge security forces. this idea of public gatherings as something probably dangerous (the MoD describe their report as “probability-based, rather than predictive”) echos the mania of the criminal justice act or the provocatively large police presence on mayday demonstrations. this initially seems strange but remember the tabloid horror when demonstrators defiled MoD pinup Winston Churchill’s sexy bald head?
