Snow scene evaded

An absurdly mild winter is upon us. Swiss banks are now refusing to loan money to Alpine ski resorts below a certain altitude – they have no snow this year and, as the climate continues to be alterted, may not for several hundred years or more. Every generation has its own apocalypse and ours is catching up with us as the post-fear-of-nuclear-destruction hangover becomes a memory. Even so, winter has a certain type of music that’s got more to do with light (at least at this latitude) than cold. Here’s some music for a low sun.

Donato Wharton can call Cardiff, Germany and London home. Here’s a track from his 2004 LP ‘Trabanten’. His latest is available as an mp3 download from Boomkat.

TBA is one of several musical psudonyms for Natalie/Tusia Beridze, a Georgian producer who releases on a German label. She recently featured on the excellent ‘4 Women No Cry‘ compilation (more). She also operates with the Tbilisi-based Goslab multimedia collective. Her releases are available through forced exposure and elsewhere. This track is taken from 2005’s ‘Georgia is like spiritual Tokyo’.
TBA – Wrestler 320k 4.9mb

Otomo Yoshihide’s New Jazz Orchestra was one of my favourite releases from last year. Over the past 15 years or so Yoshihide has been operating as a turntablist, musical theorist and maker-of-strange-instruments. The track I’ve posted here is a cover of the title track from Jim O’Rourke’s Eureka LP.

Hailing from the land of the lowest sun (Iceland) Yagya is an alias of Aðalsteinn Guðmundsson. His 2002 LP ‘The Rhythm of Snow’ is highly recommended. This is taken from this year’s Draumar Um Kaut Sulmar.

Thank you thank you thank you for the Tusia Beridze! After hearing her on 4 Women No Cry, I’ve been looking all over for her TBA stuff. I really love her. Been looking for Donato Wharton too and haven’t found any tracks anywhere else. I think you’ve just become my favorite mp3 blog for providing tracks from both.

I agree; there is something about the brief arc of the sun that is conducive to certain kinds of music. A very nice selection here, especially that Otomo track.
