Singing at people is a good way to shift free newspapers (trust me its my job). Singing is also good in music. Don’t believe me? check Mary J Blige remixed by Brucker and Sinden also behind ridiculously good Lady Sov Random remix back in this mix (2nd track I think).
Mary J Blige - Be Without You (A. Brucker and Sinden Remix) 3mb
[via Diplo’s site]
We know Justin Timberlake can sing - until now we may not have tried to ignore this, but Timbaland’s beat on this track is lethal, unignorable. Grudgingly works with the vocal too. It’s called ‘My Love’ get it from Wirewool here or here via Still Listen.
Vocal tunes popping up over dubstep too - hear D1’s track below. liquid dubstep? Skream’s summer dreams - more viscous than liquid. Heavy still. Barefiles is your one stop shop for radio rips.
D1 - Give it Back (radio) 1.1mb
Coki - Tortured / Skream - Summer Dreams 3.5mb
Always worth hovering around Radio 3 when looking for new music. Vocals off last night’s late junction:
Jean Ritchie - Edward 3.5mb
Appalachian Old Regular Baptists - Unknown 5.9mb

Funny place London, yesterday saw a mildly famous man burning all the branded things he owns - he already has a publishing deal to write about burning all the branded things he owns - it turned into a bit of a free for all at the end and I nabbed his Reebok Classics. If anyone wants to buy them off me (UK size 10) either for use or curiosity/perversity value leave a comment and I’ll be in touch.
UK MCs have always had a bit of a rough time, frequently surplus to requirements on Jungle/Drum and Bass and dismissed on hip hop as an extension of derivative production practices. In fact the reception of UK rave/post-rave/post-post rave/poster rave music almost always focusses on the rhythms - and occassionally on the MC as another rhythmic level. MCs stock rose with Grime, but threatens to fall again with the rise of Dubstep (now appearing in the Sunday Times supplement ?!). With all this in mind here’s a couple of strong UK MC things.
Kyza, Klashnekoff & Skriblah (Terra Firma)- War 4.4mb
Terra Firma interview.
Frisco - Crash Freestyle 3.5mb

15000 words and one thesis later I seem to have got my brain back. The question now is what to do with it. Posts should become less sporadic in any case. As I slowly wake up from academic stupor little has changed in the world. Race is still a big deal in America and (highbrow) Visual pleasure is still important (Almodovar on Cruz - “Penelope has got one of the most spectacular cleavages in world cinema”). A lot of big records have come out in the meantime too but I don’t have the brain juice to flower arrange them right now. here loose instead - listen as summer crawls into a ball and dies.
