Back in the cauldron then, fresh off three days of bus, ferry and trains from our northernmost point of the island of Eday where there are no trees and anarchists go to retire. The only (cycle-less) way to navigate the north-west Scottish mainland is by private car. Short range FM transmittors let the iRiver play out on the car’s system and some things went on outside the car too. Pristine beaches, sharp scenery and hardy Sutherlanders. The hottest day ever recorded in Scotland, heatstroke and arctic waves. Rediscovery of print media, the rhetoric of war crimes and Robert Fisk. Jockey headbutt’s horse the Guardian christens it the ‘summer of the headbutt‘. Music for a coastal single lane B road with 25% gradient.
Ding Dong – Badman Forward (Hard Slam) 4.8mb
Lady Stush – Dollar Sign (Chrome) 4.6mb
(now glitchless)
Iron horse and Chrome riddim – metal shield against non-urban environments. Also check South Rakkas Kru’s Chinkuzi’s Revenge and Dave Kelly’s Stage Show. From here to Carnival al forno. Next time, Orkney and Oum Khaltoum.

OM were formed by Al Cisneros and Chris Haikus, the rhythm section of doom masters Sleep. Sleep’s album Dopesmoker, consisting of one hour long track was considered too much to be released by their label. After an alternative LP was also rejected they disbanded. Jim Jarmusch used an edit (unfortunately) of dopesmoker on the soundtrack of Broken Flowers. This track is OM’s LP from this year named ‘Conference of the Birds’ after Attar’s medieval story (Islamic mysticism in penguin paberback). The LP is currently out of print but watch their label for forthcoming re-press or search out the last few copies here. They also have a split 12″ with Current 93 just out.

A million thank yous to Graeme for makeover/wordpress 2.0 etc. etc. Any broke RSS feeds should work now and the blog can be reached through http://www.wordthecat.com too. Saw Common and Stylo Prohibido (heavy) at Finsbury Park’s Rize festival then forgot DMZ was on (stupid). Skanking around the living room to Bromley’s own DJ Distance in compensation…

Some interesting documentaries have been popping up on 1xtra recently.
Here’s one on hip hop and politics in Israel.
Here’s a link to one on Japanese Dancehall. What I found in my (very limited) experience of this scene was the hierachy of credibility/authenticity with being black at the top and being from London a close second. Also notable is the popularity of ‘Reggae Dancing’. Performers like Junko have their own calenders and tuition videos available in most record shops. Having said that I’m not sure everyone who buys them are dance students. Soundwise, Yokohama’s Mighty Crown have won the World Clash soundsystem event in 1999 and the UK clash in 2002. More on them here and here.

Here’s another documentary from last year about being gay in Jamaica. In London gay dancehall/bashment nights such as Heaven’s Fruit Machine are common. This may be suprising considering the homophobia in many dancehall lyrics, but perhaps shouldn’t be cos the music is (for my money anyway) the best dance music (ie. music to DANCE to) in the world. My friend who’s a regular tells me the dancing at Fruit Machine is the best in town and this tune’s always a floorfiller:
