News Round Up

Posted by Chris on August 25, 2005 at 9:03 pm

Back in UK now since a week and politic-reality is sketchy. The fat man is blustering about deportations judged illegal by the UN. Human rights prove inconvenient and are relativised. Home secretary Charles Clarke: “the human rights of those people who were blown up on the tube in London on July 7 are, to be quite frank, more important than the human rights of the people who committed those acts.” Human rights are something people hold by virtue of their humanity. One person’s human rights cannot be more important than another’s unless that person is more human. De-humanising races or religions who find themselves in the way of Western expansion has been a useful tool for imperialists for hundreds of years. Suggesting that human rights cannot be arbitrarily re-defined by the interests of a single state would no doubt earn one the brand of “human rights extemist” by the right wing press. The Sun: “United Nations officials, “human rights” lawyers, and Muslim extremists are queuing up to support those who want to harm us.” Note the inverted commas. The same paper is also quick to defend the police and attack anyone who questions the police over the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes (7 times in the head once in the shoulder while pinned down by 2 cops). If anyone doesn’t know, the Sun’s readership is over 10 million. Next on ITV – bad lads army, followed by bad lads army privates exposed. Meta-fascism.
One family who don’t want to be neck deep in reality-media/news are the Kachepa family who were deported yesterday in the face of blanket opposition from their (British) community.
In closing, try not to worry too much. Remember the last honest man in New York is taking the fight to the United Nations, that seething nest of multi-lateralism. But don’t forget there may be female witches in your area, no doubt dancing barefoot and practicing their vegetarianism. More info here.

Buddha High School

Posted by Chris on August 13, 2005 at 8:29 pm

In Buddha High School people wear shoes on their hands and talk in machine code.

The Olsen twins had been slow to adapt socially to life in Buddha High School, even now they behaved like they were on the wrong side of a one way mirror. They used to sit at the edge of the baseball field below the bleachers and stare into each others eyes. Whenever they were disturbed they would stand and walk away wordlessly, hand in hand.
Britney was a completely different story. She was queen of summertime every day, at the front of the class with a crown of roses, thorns resting lightly on her temples. She didn`t have a group of friends like the other girls who never walked the corridors alone. But everytime she smiled, the janitor, ther students, even the lockers seemed to smile with her.
Britney and the Olsens had history but no one could remember how that history started or why they always fought, but if Britney ever saw the Olsens, be it in class, the library or the locker room, her eyes narrowed and the atmosphere in the room suddenly got colder.
I remember one time when this happened, I was in the changing room and had just stepped out of the shower. The hairs on the back of my neck raised up and my breath turned to steam. The Olsen twins were always passive. They showed no signs of emotion, just kept their eyes wide open, pupils dilating as they stepped forward to meet the challenge…

Stalin, Kannon and the Salaryman

Posted by Chris on August 8, 2005 at 10:38 pm

Ladies and Gentlemen I present Tokyo`s The Stalin.

The Stalin was a big influence to later Japanese thrash icons such as G.I.S.M., Lip Cream and Gauze (of whom Stalin guitarist Tam was a cofounder) as well as all your big Western PC grind and hardcore crust bands. In fact, the Stalin made an appearance on the cult Killed By Death Vol. 5. They also worked with Electric Dragon 80000V director Sogo Iishi (vocalist Michiro Endo starred in Iishi`s Burst City). Bill Laswell produced their 1986 album `Fish Inn`. This tracks are from their 1998 album `?`.

`I hope Kannon doesn`t judge me harshly for this, after all I do all this for him` I remember thinking as I levered the fork up through the membrane – `all there is is void, there`s no need to see anything else.` Likewise there was no need to taste anything – I swallowed the eyeball in one go & it sat in my stomach like calligraphy.
Kannon judges everyone harshly. Kannon has judged God for capricious acts of aggression and sentenced him to 137 years in the whale-turtle`s belly.
This is all the proof I ever needed, but now I would have more, the spell complete, I wiped the salt taste from my mouth and left the room. Tomorrow, after all was a new day. My blue suede shoes tapped a Tibetan death march on the cobbles, as above me the stars winked out, one by one.
I slept soundly as young men do after an important day`s work, dreaming of Tauhid – void-sapio synthesis – It only came to me in the third chamber of sleep when eyes vibrate like pendulums in the hypo-centre. I woke rapidly and necessarily and crawled to the upturned box that functioned as my writing table. I took a deep breath and vomited smoke all over the page before turning it over and sealing its illusionary essence into the rough paper like a flower dried into a scrapbook. No action without reaction.
As I called the taxi the Ganges burst its banks coating the streets of Calcutta with mud and ash. As I passed through security the last white tiger died on a bambo spear. High over the icebergs of the North Atlantic I felt the bones in my left arm rearrange in sympathy with the redefined structure of Patagonian glaciers. No progress without loss. Time for work.
Stepped out int the sun which rose like dense description and cast spells over the paving. Past the corner shopping trolleys rolling cross the street. Angels above the gate. Into ChinaTown – the law can`t reach here – toothless dragon faced with white heat. First left, then right, skipping over manholes – one for luck, two for a fuck, three`s the golden eagle. Elevator: street level – 16th flr, low smog today, choking birds in mid-flight. Office twisted like a rhombus. View over the docks – water tower dipped like drinking birds. Console warms up. Stuffed tiger silent in the corner. Morning! Bring tea!
The void vibrates soft behind it all – as it begun so it shall end, in projection. Friends and enemies, we`ve eaten eyeballs, toured the world and held our dicks like they were rising oil prices. Softly softly, follow the turtle, the lizards can`t touch us here…

Action is currently taking place in East Iceland to try and stop the construction of the huge hydro-electric Kárahnjúkar dam project. The dam would flood 57 square km of wilderness in the Icelandic interior. In a good piece on the dam, engineer Sigthur St Arnalds describes this process as “wilderness reduction, not destruction”. The power from the dam will go exclusively to an outsourced US aluminium-smelting plant operated by Alcoa. The construction of the dam is being carried out by Betchel who are currently neck deep in Iraq. Action against the dam is ongoing and saw the biggest protest in Icelandic history (only 1000 people, but Iceland is a small country) as well as a hunger strike by Bjork`s mum. Recently 16 activists shut down construction at the dam for 3 hours. There is a trend among activists of idealising Iceland and it`s people. I remember in the run up to the invasion of Iraq, leaflets being distributed encouraging people in London to call for diplomatic intervention from the Icelandic government – because it has no army (except for fat US military presence and a joint defence agreement) and is the longest-running continually operational democracy in the world (again untrue – although it had a parliament during settlement, Iceland was run directly by the Danish crown for several hundred years). There is also an assumption (which seems to come mostly from Bjork videos) that Icelandic people are simple folk who live in animist harmony with the land. Politics in Iceland are run by a oligarch of established families and strongly influenced by the presence of an enormous US air base at Keflavik (which is also a major link in Echelon – the system which allows the US to monitor any phone conversation in Western Europe). 2 years ago when I left Iceland after living there for 6 months there were 2 newspapers – Morgunblathith and the free Frettirblathith- both occupying unshakable US-friendly centre-right editorial space.
Iceland`s population is urbanising rapidly and, it is argued, this plant will create jobs outside Rekjavik. That`s 1000 jobs at a cost of $1.4 billion for the dam and $1.1 for the smelting plant, that works out at $2.5 million per job plus the cost to the environment.
So how can this make sense – are all politicians just shape shifting lizards feeding the military-industrial machine? This explanation seems just a little too obvious. Why not ask Koizumi? He just called snap elections because he lost a vote to privatise Japan`s enormous (and efficient) post office. If successful this move would have created the world`s biggest bank.

BRITNEY COMES OUT SWINGING FOR BUSH
Wed Sep 03 2003 19:35:45 ET

Britney Spears came out swinging for President Bush on Wednesday during an interview with CNN’s Tucker Carlson.

CARLSON: A lot of entertainers have come out against the war in Iraq. Have you?

SPEARS: Honestly, I think we should just trust our president in every decision that he makes and we should just support that, you know, and be faithful in what happens.

CARLSON: Do you trust this president?

SPEARS: Yes, I do.

CARLSON: Excellent. Do you think he’s going to win again?

SPEARS: I don’t know. I don’t know that.

Great Stone

Vex`d stones via Yoshida Tatsuya.

Dubstep explosion. Here`s a Vex`d track – their album just dropped on Planet Mu. You can legal download the whole thing at Bleep. This track originally on the Our Sound four pack on Destructive.

Vex`d – End Of Line feat. Search & Destroy.mp3

For some deep moody stuff check the Hatcha mix at Blackdown . Site is also well worth checking for Blackdown and Dusk`s Keynote radio mix. Martin Clark/Blackdown also has a monthly Dubstep column over at Pitchfork. This month you can find a brief history of the genre. Dubstep collects mixes from all over the place. Also loads of mixes over at Kode 9`sHyperdub. It takes so much less time to download this stuff that to listen to it.

Just up over at Lemon Red is Ghislain Poirer`s Dirtier than Clean mix. Load of ragga, grime, you know the score by now. Not sure about the Ying Yang acapella – removed from the heavy original track you pay more attention to the lyrics. Having said that I`ve been singing it to the house kitten (mimi – Japanese for ear) all afternoon. This GP track with Beans is fine.

Getting slightly nervous about going back to LDN. 6000 heavily armed police on the road supposedly solving crimes that don`t yet exist and serious anti protest laws. V for Vendetta visions of Commandante Blair blaring through martial law streets in his blacked out cavalcade seem too close for comfort.
