Between Sounds
'Between Sounds' is a walk through Notting Hill, London on two different days. One normal weekday and the day of Notting Hill Carnival, Europe's biggest street party. The carnival was started in 1962 by the Caribbean community in response to race riots in the area. Notting Hill has changed a lot since then, it is now one of the most expensive places in London with average house prices at £3million. On the day of the carnival the streets and private gardens of Notting Hill shed this exclusivity and become intensely public, hosting parade trucks, soundsystems and revellers from across town.
The two sets of recordings, made during and after carnival are edited together here to allow us to hear the flexibility and transience of the city and its spaces.
'Between Sounds' was first broadcast on stress.fm as part of the Osso: Mapping programme in Lisbon 2013
